Former Vice President at the Trent University. He was Master of Champlain College from 1969 to 1971 and a professor in the Department of Political Science to 1983 when he left to teach and become Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. Smith was an editor of the Journal of Canadian studies and of the Canadian forum. He was also president of the Canadian Periodical Publishers’ Association.
