  1. All titles must be submitted by the publisher. No other entries will be accepted.It is not necessary that all titles be submitted at the same time.
  2. Seven copies of each title are to be delivered to the Prize Manager, along with an electronic copy. Submission entries must be received by October 31, 2023 physical copies of the books must be received no later November 4, 2023 (the electronic copy must be received by the October 31 submission deadline to remain eligible). For titles published between November 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023, the publisher may submit bound galleys or bound typescripts. Electronic versions submitted without hard copies will not be accepted.

The Prize is not responsible for incoming duty charges or retrieving submissions from courier/postal outlets.

  1. A $100.00 USD per-entry handling fee is required. This amount should be made payable to the University of Toronto by cheque or processed by credit card. Please contact the Prize Manager for further information.
  2. Each submission must include a completed submission form publication or release date, a general overview of its contents, a list of countries where the title will be distributed, and the names and addresses of distributors in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
  3. The winning title will produce and carry a sticker that recognizes the title being awarded the Lionel Gelber Prize.
  4. It is the responsibility of the publisher to ensure safe and timely arrival of book shipments to the Prize Manager. Neither the Prize Manager nor The Lionel Gelber Prize Board are responsible for difficulties that may be experienced by foreign publishers submitting from outside Canada, including customs duties, and/or taxes owing. Such shipments will not be accepted or acknowledged by the Prize office and will be returned by the carrier to the original point of shipping.

Each title is judged by a distinguished jury knowledgeable in the field of international relations. A shortlist of up to six titles will be announced in February 2024.

The selection of the winning book will be announced in March 2024. An award ceremony to present the Prize will take place in Spring 2024, at which time the winning author is required to address the audience and be available for media interviews. The author of the winning book will deliver a public lecture, at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto, Canada.
